For many Ugandan families classical musical training is simply unaffordable. With careful management from it’s Board, KMS has been able to provide help where it is needed and maintain a context which has enriched somany young lives. Some come from bleak situations and have been provided with a safe refuge, the means of expressing themselves, and importantly the means of earning a livelihood. At least 25 Ugandan teachers, formerly KMS students, are now earning a living wage from their music.
Future plans ……..
New premises are urgently needed. The current space under the YMCA has become very cramped, unbearably noisy and completely outgrown! The ten-year lease expires in 2011 and a move to a new building is not only desirable but essential if progress is to continue.
The aim is to buy land and build a new music school, with more practice and rehearsal rooms, bigger library facilities, a performance hall, offices, recreation room and accommodation for volunteer teachers. Land in central Kampala is expensive which makes this an ambitious yet very exciting project.
